The message behind the King’s new direction is becoming increasingly clear: in the modern British Monarchy, titles cannot simply exist as symbols of privilege while those who carry them remain outside the responsibilities of Royal life.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped away from official duties, moved to California and built a completely separate public life. But their titles still connect them directly to the institution they chose to leave behind.
And now, that connection is under pressure.
no Royal work
no active service
no official responsibility
but still the Royal title
For King Charles III, this is no longer only a family matter. It is about the credibility of the Crown and how the British Royal Family will be represented in the years ahead.
If Royal titles are to carry respect, they must also carry purpose. They must reflect loyalty, discipline and service to the Monarchy — not simply remain attached to those who no longer stand within its working structure.
That is why Harry and Meghan could now be facing a difficult new reality.
The title of Duke and Duchess of Sussex may no longer be protected simply because it was once given.
Not if the Crown is moving towards stricter rules.
Not if public trust is at stake.
Not if the King decides Royal status must be earned through continued service.
Meanwhile, Prince William and Princess Catherine continue to stand at the centre of duty, stability and the future of the Monarchy. Their position is strengthened not only by rank, but by their continued commitment to the Crown.
The contrast is impossible to ignore.
One couple remained to serve.
One couple chose a life away from Royal duty.
And under the new direction of King Charles III, that difference could now carry serious consequences.
In my opinion, this is a necessary step. The Monarchy cannot protect its future while allowing Royal titles to become disconnected from service, responsibility and respect for the institution.
Harry and Meghan chose independence. But independence should also mean accepting that Royal status may no longer remain untouched forever.
Do you believe King Charles III should remove the Sussex titles if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle continue living outside official Royal service?
