Sky News was halted for a bombshell breaking update, as anchor Mark Austin interrupted normal proceedings to tell viewers about a developing story in New York City. Two protesters have managed to climb to the very top of the Empire State Building, clutching a banner that reads: “When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.”

Austin explained to viewers: “Some breaking news from New York, and we can show you some pictures of a couple of protesters who have got to the top of the antennae on the top of the Empire State Building in New York. They have unfurled a banner. What are they protesting about? Well, it is something about the power of love… and why not?”

Fox News also halted its usual coverage to offer a live helicopter feed of the couple, with one of the pair getting down on one knee at the base of the antennae to propose to their partner in what turned out to be an elaborate engagement stunt.

Viewers on both channels were gobsmacked by the news, with one writing on X: “The absolute anxiety of pulling out a ring 1,450 feet in the air. If she said no on top of that Empire State Building spire, it’s a terrifyingly long walk down.”

Another said: “They climbed the Empire State just to prove love beats the laws of physics? Bro, if your love needs a 1,454-foot antenna to be noticed, maybe just text her.”

While a third viewer said: “Awesome, congratulations!”

New York police have not yet confirmed the identities of the pair, but speculation has been rife that they are Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus, Russian “rooftoppers” known for their elaborate skyscraper stunts.
