US star sent off, Americans rage
US star Folarin Balogun has been sent off. From hero to villain for the American goal scorer but it isn’t without controversy.
The striker stamped on the back of the leg of Tarik Muharemovic as he battled the Bosnian for possession.
It didn’t look anything more than a complete accident but after VAR review Brazilian referee Raphael Claus concluded a red card for “serious foul play” was the only option.
A tackle was deemed “serious foul play” is a challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality.
FT: Huge drama as USA makes history
For the first time ever Team USA have won three games at a World Cup as they progress to the round of 16 after beating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in in Santa Clara.
“It’s heartbreak for Bosnia and Herzegovina, but for the USA, the dream continues, and their World Cup ambitions are very much alive,” David Roder said in commentary on SBS.
It means all three host nations are through to the last 16.
Team USA will face Belgium in the next round in Seattle on Tuesday morning.
82′: USA crowd erupts as lead doubled
The home has erupted as Malik Tillmann makes it 2-0 with a free-kick from just outside the box.
A shocking effort from the goalkeeper it has to be said.
The curling effort goes over the wall but isn’t anywhere near the corner. Very poor from the Bosnian and that should be enough to send Team USA into the last 16.
“If this stadium had a roof it would have just lifted off,” David Roder said in commentary.
79′: Tempers boiling over
Both teams are getting hot under the collar and now it is the Bosnian coach that has let his emotions get the better of him.
Bosnian coach Sergej Barbarez is shown yellow for not giving the ball to the American player after it went out of play.
“A terrible example he is setting for his players,” commentator John Roder exclaimed.
“That is completely unacceptable.”
HT: Team USA closes in on round of 16
Team USA are in full control and threatened to double their lead late in the first half.
Bosnia will need a big half-time team talk and to be more aggressive in the second if they are to have any chance of reaching the round of 16.
As it stands USA are in the box seat to progress into the next round against Belgium.
44′: Balogun gets his moment
Folarin Balogun does get his goal after an error at the back from Bosnia.
The Team USA striker makes no mistake sliding it past keeper Nikola Vasilj.
USA leads 1-0.
31′: USA celebrates goal, but it’s ruled out
Folarin Balogun thought he had the opener but he was caught offside.
A beautiful snap finish into the bottom right corner but it won’t count.
25′: Tentative start by both teams
USA are controlling the early exchanges with Bosnia and Herzegovina, happy to sit back in a strong defensive shape and look to counter.
Team USA have found the back of the net in all three of their group matches inside 15 minutes, so this is the first time they have failed to produce an early goal at the World Cup.
USA-Bosnia underway
The final clash of the day between USA and Bosnia and Herzegovina is underway in Santa Clara with a Round of 16 clash with Belgium awaiting the winner.
‘Unbelievable’: World Cup result overturned
Belgium has scored the latest goal in World Cup history to steal a 3-2 win against Senegal.
There was anarchy on the pitch and on the sidelines after a controversial penalty was awarded in the 125th minute following a VAR overturn that has divided the football world.
All hell broke loose when a Senegal defender slided in from behind Youri Tielemans, taking out the Aston Villa star’s left leg after the teams went into extra time 2-2.
After a lengthy review, referee Hector Sorto awarded a penalty. Tielemans converted the penalty with a booming strike into the top right hand corner.
