Former GMTV presenter Fiona Phillips is facing the most difficult chapter of her life, and her husband, Martin Frizell, has now spoken with heartbreaking honesty about the devastating reality of living with Alzheimer’s disease.
During an emotional television interview, the former This Morning editor admitted that watching the woman he has loved for decades slowly disappear has become an unimaginable daily heartbreak.
“We can see her slipping away,” he said, describing the cruel progression of the disease that has transformed life for their entire family.
A Family Watching Memories Fade
Fiona, now 65, publicly revealed in 2023 that she had been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s after initially believing her symptoms—including brain fog, anxiety and confusion—were caused by menopause. The diagnosis came as a devastating shock, despite Alzheimer’s having already affected both of her parents.
Since then, Martin has stepped away from his demanding television career to become her full-time carer, determined to spend as much time with his wife as possible.
Speaking candidly, he revealed that the disease has gradually stolen many of Fiona’s recent memories.
She no longer remembers Christmas or New Year, moments that most families treasure. Yet Martin was careful to explain that behind the memory loss, the woman he married is still there.
“I don’t want people to think she’s gone,” he explained. “She’s still very much with us.”
“It’s Wretched”
Martin did not hide how emotionally exhausting the journey has become.
“It’s wretched,” he admitted.
Not only is he witnessing Fiona’s memories slowly disappear, but he is also experiencing the painful grief that comes with caring for someone who is physically present while gradually losing parts of themselves.
He described Alzheimer’s as affecting the entire family, not just the person diagnosed.
The couple’s two sons have also had to watch their mother change in ways they never imagined, adapting to a new reality that continues to evolve each day.
Still Finding Moments Of Joy
Despite the heartbreaking progression of the illness, Martin says there are still precious moments that remind him of the woman millions of viewers came to know.
He smiled while describing Fiona as remaining “the world’s most stubborn woman,” joking that convincing her to take medication can still be just as challenging as ever.
He recently shared a photograph of Fiona smiling during a family outing, hoping to reassure supporters that although Alzheimer’s is progressing, she continues to enjoy simple pleasures and precious moments with those she loves.
Turning Heartbreak Into Awareness
Rather than keeping their struggle private, Fiona and Martin have become passionate advocates for greater awareness of Alzheimer’s and better support for families living with dementia.
Their memoir, Remember When: My Life With Alzheimer’s, offers an intimate account of Fiona’s diagnosis and Martin’s experience as her primary carer. The book has been praised for its raw honesty, revealing not only the medical reality of Alzheimer’s but also the emotional impact on an entire family.
Martin has repeatedly urged politicians and health leaders to invest more in dementia research and support services, arguing that far too many families are left to face the disease with limited help.
A Love That Refuses To Fade
While Alzheimer’s continues to steal memories, Martin’s unwavering devotion remains unchanged.
His heartbreaking admission that he can “see her slipping away” captures the cruel reality faced by countless families affected by dementia. Yet alongside the sadness is a powerful reminder that love often endures even when memories begin to fade.
For Martin, every shared smile, every familiar expression and every quiet moment with Fiona has become more precious than ever—a testament to a marriage built on far more than memory alone.
