Richard Branson returns to Necker Island for an emotional celebration of Joan’s life
Six weeks after the heartbreaking loss of his wife Joan Templeman, Sir Richard Branson gathered his family on Necker Island for a deeply personal celebration of her life. Rather than a formal public memorial, the family chose an intimate evening filled with music, stories, laughter and tears—just as Joan would have wanted.
Branson, who announced Joan’s passing in November, had described her as his “best friend, my rock, my guiding light, my world.” Those words echoed throughout the memorial as family and close friends reflected on the woman who had quietly stood beside him for nearly five decades. Joan, who always preferred to stay out of the spotlight, was remembered not only as Richard’s greatest supporter, but as the heart of their family.
Their children, Holly and Sam, joined the private gathering, with Sam performing music in tribute to his mother. Branson later revealed that the celebration included “stories, songs, laughter and tears” in honour of “the most incredible partner, mum, grandmother and friend.”
