This spooky unique take on classic horror even has a festive link – and Netflix fans can watch it right now.
A horror series described by some fans as ‘better than Stranger Things ‘ is now streaming on Netflix.
The show is also an adaptation of a ‘spine tingling’ best-selling novel. All seasons of NOS4A2 have been added to the streaming platform as of today (December 9).
According to the synopsis, the series follows Victoria “Vic” McQueen, a young working-class artist who discovers that she has a supernatural ability to track the seemingly immortal Charlie Manx. Manx feeds on the souls of children, then deposits what remains of them into Christmasland.
A twisted Christmas Village of Manx’s imagination where every day is Christmas Day and unhappiness is against the law. Vic must strive to defeat Manx and rescue his victims without losing her mind or falling victim to him herself.
The plot is taken from the book of the same name, written by Joe Hill. Hill is known for his supernatural tales in short stories and novels as well as being the son of acclaimed author Stephen King. Other works of Hill’s which have been adapted for the screen include The Black Phone, Locke & Key, Horns and In The Tall Grass.
NOS4A2’s cast includes The Bear star Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Zachary Quinto, known for his previous roles in the Star Trek movies and the series Heroes. All 20 episodes are available on Netflix, as the show ran for just two seasons but that was long enough to complete the story.
It holds a respectable 72% rating on website Rotten Tomatoes but its fanscore is even higher at 80%. Fans who have already watched the series since its debut in 2019 praise how it brings the book to life and its lead performances in particular.
Quinto is a favourite as the villain, with those familiar with his Heroes role tipped to enjoy another sinister turn from the actor. One fan, sharing their thoughts online said: “Zachary Quinto really did an amazing job of bringing the villain, Charlie Manx to life in this series. Not to mention the portrayal of Vic McQueen played by Ashleigh Cummings was extremely impressive.”
They continued: “The supporting cast was also exemplary as well. They really made this series worth watching and had me on the edge of my seat during the entirety. Sad that it only had two seasons but still very enjoyable and highly entertaining.”
Another viewer confessed: “I am shattered this was cancelled, it is far better than Stranger Things.” While someone else added: “Masterful writing, acting, as well as genius conception and adaptation!”
One person commented: “This is SUCH a good show! I love the originality of the take on a sort of vampire villain, as well as the storyline. Joe Hill’s book was so captivating, and they did a great job making it into a series!”
A fan posted: “NOS4A2 is one of the best new horrors to make it to the small screen. Well worth a couple of hours of your time.”
And another said: “OMG just can’t get enough. It’s worth binge watching if you haven’t already seen it! Keeps you on the edge of your seat every week. I hope this has a long run its definitely worth watching.”
