It’s the news that has broken hearts across Britain. Beloved Birds of a Feather star Pauline Quirke, 65, who brought laughter and warmth to millions, is now facing the toughest fight of her life — a rapidly progressing battle with dementia.
The actress, adored for her role as Sharon since the show’s debut in 1989, was diagnosed with the condition back in 2021. But she and her family kept it private until this January, when her husband Steve Sheen released a heartfelt statement confirming the truth.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce my wife Pauline’s decision to step back from all professional and commercial duties due to her diagnosis of dementia,” Steve said. “Pauline has been an inspiration through her work in film, TV, and her performing arts academy — a legacy that will continue to touch young lives for years to come.”
“She’s Not Okay Now” — Friends Speak Out
At the Variety Club Showbusiness Awards, actress Lesley Joseph, 80, Pauline’s close friend and Birds of a Feather co-star, gave a moving update that left fans in tears.
“Pauline is not too well after being diagnosed with dementia a while ago,” Lesley revealed softly. “She’s not okay now. I haven’t had time, but I’m going to go up and see her next week.
For decades, Pauline, Lesley, and Linda Robson were inseparable — both on screen and off. Their sisterly bond was the soul of Birds of a Feather, a show about friendship through life’s hardest storms.
Now, that friendship has taken on an even deeper meaning.
“She Struggles to Recognise Her Family”
According to the show’s co-writer Maurice Gran, Pauline’s condition has sadly “gathered pace.”
“Pauline was experiencing trouble recognising her own family members,” he told the Daily Mail. “Since the diagnosis, her condition has progressed. She’s still only 65, so your heart goes out to her. Initially, she felt she was beginning to lose her grip. Now, we understand she struggles to identify members of her own family.”
Those closest to her say Pauline’s gentle spirit remains, even as her memory fades.
“Where’s My Mate Linda Robson?” — A Flicker of Light
During a recent episode of the Loose Women podcast Just Between Us, Linda Robson shared a bittersweet moment that gave fans a glimpse of hope.
Linda revealed that Pauline’s son Charlie had called her with some emotional news:
“Sometimes she has down days, but at the moment she’s quite up about everything,” Linda said tenderly. “Charlie told me she suddenly asked, ‘Where’s my mate Linda Robson?’ — and they all got really excited.”
Linda admitted the call made her cry. “I got quite emotional when he told me,” she said. “We’ve been friends since we were 10 years old. To hear that she still remembers me in some moments — that means everything.”
From Spotlight to Silence — A Legacy That Lives On
Pauline Quirke may have stepped away from the public eye, but her influence continues to shine through her Performing Arts Academy (PQA) — the school she founded to inspire confidence and creativity in young people.
Her husband Steve says her vision “touched countless lives,” and through her students, Pauline’s legacy will live on — one performance, one dream, one memory at a time.
“She’ll Always Be Our Sharon”
For fans, Pauline will forever be the down-to-earth, big-hearted Sharon — the girl who made them laugh, cry, and believe in the power of friendship.
Though dementia has stolen much, it cannot erase the joy she brought or the love she inspired.
As Linda Robson said it best:
“No matter what happens, she’ll always be my mate. Always.”
