In her last ever live interview, just four hours before she was killed, former MP Ann Widdecombe warned of a hidden “establishment” operating behind the scenes of UK politics. The 78-year-old appeared on TalkTV speaking to Mark Dolan via videolink from her home. They were discussing Nigel Farage’s resignation and announcement he would subsequently run in the Clacton-on Sea by-election when she shared the shock revelation. “I’ve got very little trust left now in parliamentary processes,” she said.
“If you look at this government…look at the way that it’s reacted when it’s felt vulnerable…Changes to political donations, cancelling local elections – we all remember that. Going for votes at 16. Loosening the voter ID requirements. They react in such a way that is geared all around self-preservation,” she opined. “I do think now that different parts of the establishment act in ways which I think are extremely questionable,” she added.
By Friday, July 10, it was revealed that the police had launched a murder investigation into her death.

On Saturday night, July 11, Devon and Cornwall Police revealed a 28-year-old white British man had been arrested on suspicion of murder in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, – 270 miles from Miss Widdecombe’s home.
Counter-terrorism police are currently probing whether the suspect was motivated by left-wing extremism and planning further violence against other high-profile figures.
Detectives have confirmed Miss Widdecombe’s death was a “targeted attack”, and said whether the suspect in the alleged murder was targeting Reform UK figures will be a “line of investigation”.
The police investigation is also probing whether left-wing extremism or other political motives were behind the killing.
