A Private Family Life
Speaking with the Mirror, Gareth, 45, revealed that he and his wife, Amy, have enjoyed over 20 years of marriage while raising their 10-year-old daughter in Manchester. “My job puts me in the public eye, but I very much try to keep my wife and daughter out of it,” he explained.
Gareth detailed the couple’s simple pleasures: “We love the beach, barbecuing, little hikes. I go to a lot of gigs and am into heavy metal and punk. At home, we curl up on the sofa and watch our favourite programmes together. My daughter’s 10 now, so we love Gladiators, Traitors and Race Across the World.”
He also described how his daughter has grown up with his fame as a normal part of life. “She hasn’t really known any different. She was four when I joined Coronation Street. Like most kids, what their parents do isn’t that interesting. We watch the Christmas episode together, though. What I love the most is that she gets to see that her dad has found a job where he can keep that imagination and that creative play that kids do so instinctively going into adult life. And it actually pays the bills.”
The Return of Todd Grimshaw
Gareth joined the soap in 2020, stepping into the already established role of Todd Grimshaw, Eileen Grimshaw’s son. His character quickly became central to multiple high-stakes storylines, including a manipulative plot that drove a wedge between former partners Billy Mayhew and Paul Foreman. Though Todd’s actions initially caused heartbreak, the trio later formed a strong friendship, becoming surrogate fathers to Summer Spellman.
Tragedy struck when Paul succumbed to Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2024, leaving a lasting impact on both the character and viewers. Todd’s love life then intersected with a darker narrative when he became involved with Theo Silverton, leading to a storyline exploring coercive control and domestic abuse.
Tackling Coercive Control and Domestic Abuse
For over a year, Gareth’s character navigated the harrowing experience of coercive control, highlighting the dangers of domestic abuse on daytime television. In a dramatic twist last April, Theo’s violent behaviour culminated in his death, witnessed by the horror-struck Betsy Swain.
Todd faced intense scrutiny as suspicions arose over Theo’s death, only for the truth to emerge when Sarah Platt admitted to delivering the fatal blow. Gareth described the storyline as “a privilege to be trusted with,” praising the writers for their work with LGBTQ+ anti-abuse charity, Galop. “Coronation Street does very well representing a scenario like that which can actually be, sadly, many people’s realities. There’s a certain amount of pressure and expectation. I’ve been heartened by the way people have become engaged with the story. When I’m out and about, people are genuinely concerned about me. They ask me how I’m doing, let alone Todd.”
Fans were drawn into Todd’s predicament, often warning the character about Theo’s intentions before the storyline allowed him to recognize the danger himself. “There was a frustrating period for the audience, where they felt they could see the red flags sooner than Todd. I was getting advice from strangers telling me, ‘Go on, get out of there,’ and ‘That Theo’s a wrong’un.’ I had to explain that I have to do what the writers tell me.”
Justice Served on the Cobble
Ultimately, Theo’s comeuppance offered a satisfying resolution. Gareth reflected, “There’s a strict moral compass to Coronation Street and a sense that justice has to be served eventually. Theo’s day of judgment has been very much longed for. Karma has been served.”
The storyline not only provided intense drama but also underscored the soap’s commitment to raising awareness around sensitive social issues, particularly coercive control and LGBTQ+ domestic abuse.
From Class Clown to Soap Star
Gareth credits his early school experiences for shaping his career. Moving frequently due to his father’s army career, Gareth embraced acting as a form of creative expression. “When I was about 12, a teacher said, ‘man, we should put this kid on stage’. I suddenly had a forum for that part of my personality,” he recalled. Encouraged to pursue drama, Gareth joined the National Youth Theatre in London, later performing in Welsh theatre productions before landing roles in radio drama and The Archers.
Reflecting on education, Gareth emphasized the vital role teachers play in recognising and nurturing talent: “Teachers are so precious. It is genuinely one of the most important professions in the world. It’s always great when people in the public eye give credit to those who first gave them a leg up.”
Charity Work and Personal Passions
Outside the cobbles, Gareth remains active in charity work, serving as a longstanding ambassador for Age UK. He has been promoting the organization’s Act Now Age Better campaign, encouraging activity and well-being at any stage of life. He also stays in peak physical condition, running, cycling, and swimming regularly.
Although Gareth continues to navigate intense storylines on Coronation Street, he has set his sights on expanding his acting repertoire. “I love Manchester—it’s vibrant, the people are amazing—but it does rain quite a lot. I’ve always enjoyed languages, so I think my next acting path could involve working in warmer countries. For my next murder plot, I’m thinking of Death in Paradise, set in the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. It’s a chance to explore, but still work.”
A Balancing Act
Despite the fame and intensity of his work on the cobbles, Gareth remains committed to maintaining a grounded family life. Balancing a career in one of Britain’s most-watched soaps with a private, fulfilling home life in Manchester illustrates his dedication to both craft and family.
From the morally complex world of Todd Grimshaw to his real-life roles as husband, father, and charity ambassador, Gareth Pierce continues to captivate fans, proving that the actor behind the character is as dynamic and multidimensional as the stories he helps bring to life on Coronation Street.
