Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance have entered a new chapter as parents following the arrival of their fourth child, son Alec Neel Vance.
The couple welcomed baby Alec on July 19, expanding their family to four children and marking a rare moment in the history of the vice presidency. According to the information shared by the family, Usha became only the second known wife of a sitting vice president to give birth while serving as second lady.
The Vances announced Alec’s birth in a joint Instagram post, confirming that both mother and baby were healthy and that their three older children were excited to welcome a new little brother.
Alongside the announcement, they also thanked the military doctors at Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit for the care they received throughout the delivery.
Raising a family in public life
Although JD and Usha Vance hold one of the nation’s highest-profile roles, they have largely kept their children out of the public spotlight.
JD Vance has previously spoken about balancing public service with family life, saying he and Usha strive to give their children as much normalcy as possible despite their unique circumstances.
Speaking to Fox News in 2025, Vance also discussed raising their children in an interfaith household. While he is Christian and Usha was raised in the Hindu faith, the couple decided to raise their children as Christians.
A closer look at the Vance children
The couple welcomed their oldest son, Ewan, in June 2017.
While little is publicly known about him, Ewan joined his parents and siblings during the vice presidential inauguration in January 2025. Months later, Vance said his oldest child understood more about the family’s public role than his younger siblings and was continuing to adjust to life as part of the second family.
Their second son, Vivek, was born in February 2020.
During his time in the Senate, Vance publicly acknowledged missing Vivek’s birthday dinner because of work responsibilities, telling his son that he loved him before reading Oh, The Places You’ll Go! from the Senate floor.
He later described Vivek to Fox News as less aware of the family’s political responsibilities, saying he simply enjoyed spending time with the Secret Service agents assigned to protect the family.
Vance announced her birth by describing her as an early Christmas gift and sharing that both mother and daughter were doing well.
Mirabel has since appeared alongside her parents during several official trips, including visits to India’s Taj Mahal and the Vatican during Holy Week.

Earlier this year, JD and Usha Vance revealed they were expecting another son before confirming his arrival on July 19.
With Alec’s arrival, the Vances are now a family of six, celebrating both a personal milestone and a historic moment for the office of the vice president. While they continue to keep much of their family life private, the glimpses they have shared reflect their focus on raising their four children while navigating the demands of public service.
