Five men and one woman arrested after tragic bungee jump incident claims the life of a 21-year-old woman

Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas fell from the Ponte do Esqueleto, known locally as Skeleton Bridge, in Limeira, São Paulo, on Saturday, June 13, according to Brazilian media reports including G1 and Folha de Pernambuco.

Footage circulating on social media shows the moment Maria was escorted to the edge of the bridge by staff members and then pushed off while wearing a helmet. Witnesses can be heard shouting in the background after noticing something was wrong, with one person yelling, “Guys, the rope!”

According to police reports, Maria dropped approximately 40 meters (around 130–131 feet) into a ravine below after allegedly being thrown without any safety cord attached. Emergency services, including a police helicopter, were dispatched, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Maria, a physical education and sports management graduate, had booked the experience as part of a guided rope jump activity at the disused bridge. Hours before the incident, she had posted lighthearted messages on social media about the planned jump, including a joking caption: “Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge?”

Her fiancé reportedly became unwell upon arriving at the scene and required emergency medical attention, according to local reports. Her social media accounts were later taken down.

Authorities confirmed that six people have been taken in for questioning in connection with the incident. Three men, aged 27, 32, and 42, were arrested at the scene and charged with homicide with implied malice. Officials also said the activity was being conducted by an unregulated group operating without proper authorization or oversight.

The workers forgot to attach the rope before pushing Maria off

A police official stated that the fatality appears to have resulted from a critical failure in safety procedures, including the alleged failure to attach the rope before Maria was pushed from the platform. Two suspects reportedly attempted to flee into a wooded area but were later located with the help of a helicopter.

Brazil’s Civil Police and Military Police are continuing their investigation, while local authorities in Limeira have indicated they may pursue legal action against federal agencies, arguing that oversight and safety enforcement at the site had been insufficient despite prior warnings about risks at the location.

Social media reaction

The incident has sparked widespread shock online, with many users reacting to the footage and questioning how such a basic safety step could have been missed.

“This isn’t a mistake, this is negligence on every level. How do you push someone without checking the rope?” one user wrote.

Another commented: “She literally trusted them with her life. One job. Attach the rope. That’s it.”

Others expressed anger over the operators involved: “This should never have been ‘staff forgot’. This is a life. There has to be accountability.”

A third user added: “I can’t believe this was filmed. You can literally hear people realize too late what’s happening.”

As investigations continue, the case has become one of the most disturbing recent examples of extreme sports safety failures in Brazil, raising renewed questions about regulation, supervision, and responsibility at informal adventure sites.
