1. Select the Right Leaf:
- Choose a healthy, mature leaf from your snake plant. Avoid any that show signs of disease or damage.
- Use a sharp, clean knife or scissors to cut the leaf near the base.
2. Cut the Leaf into Sections:
- Cut the leaf into 3–4 inch sections (around 8–10 cm). Make sure each piece is cut straight across to avoid confusion during planting.
- Label the cuttings if needed, since snake plant leaves can root from either end, but it’s easier if you keep them consistent.
3. Let It Callus:
- Leave the cuttings out for 24–48 hours in a warm, dry place. This helps the cut ends heal and form a callus, reducing the risk of rot when planted.
4. Prepare Your Potting Mix:
- Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix, or make your own by adding sand or perlite to regular potting soil.
- Fill a small pot with the mix and make a small hole in the center.
5. Plant the Leaf Cuttings:
- Insert the cut end of each section about 1–2 inches deep into the soil. Ensure it’s placed upright.
- Gently press the soil around the cutting to secure it in place.
6. Watering:
- Water lightly after planting. Let the soil dry out between waterings, as snake plants are sensitive to overwatering.
- Mist the leaves occasionally to help with humidity, but don’t keep the soil soggy.
7. Provide Proper Lighting:
- Place your pot in bright, indirect light. Snake plants are quite adaptable, but they grow best in moderate light.
- Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
8. Be Patient:
- Snake plants take time to root—anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks. You can check for roots by gently tugging on the leaf cutting.
- Once you feel resistance, it’s time to pot the cutting into a larger container if it hasn’t already rooted in the current one.
Bonus Tip:
- After your new snake plant begins to root, you can treat it like an adult plant by continuing to care for it with light, water, and occasional fertilizer during the growing season.
💡 Pro Tip: You can even experiment with leaf cuttings in water until they root before transferring them into soil.
