Now, it’s been confirmed that The Death of Robin Hood will be rated R for strong bloody violence. This would also make it one of the rare adaptations to hit this rating, considering Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, and Taron Egerton’s versions were PG-13.
The Siege of Robin Hood and Robin Hood: Ghosts of Sherwood are among the few iterations that also garnered an R-rating, but they don’t compare to the star-studded cast of A24’s upcoming thriller. Disney’s famous 1973 animated movie is one of the tamest and kid-friendly, with a G-rating.
While most Robin Hood stories have showcased the famous archer for his heroism and vigilantism, the A24 movie, written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, depicts the legendary outlaw filled with regret. As he grapples with his violent past, a nurse attends to the injured figure after having fought in a battle.
Alongside Jackman, The Death of Robin Hood cast includes Jodie Comer, Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe. Skarsgård will portray the protagonist’s companion, Little John.
In addition, most movies haven’t been well-received by critics. While the 2018 version is the lowest-rated with a 14%, Crowe, Costner, and Cary Elwes’ adaptation earned 43%, 51%, and 42%, respectively. However, Errol Flynn’s The Adventures of Robin Hood has a perfect 100%.
One of the most recent iterations was MGM+’s TV show starring Sean Bean and Jack Patten. It received far more favorable reviews, and it currently holds a 77% Rotten Tomatoes score. As of writing, the studio has not yet renewed the series for season 2.
The Death of Robin Hood does not have a release date yet, but it’s scheduled for sometime in 2026.
