Inside Kate Middleton’s New Chapter at a Crucial Moment for the Monarchy: ‘She Is the Future’ (Exclusive)

Stepping into Piazza Prampolini in the northern Italian city of Reggio Emilia on May 13, Kate Middleton placed a hand on her chest as thousands gathered below City Hall erupted into cheers of “Kate!” and “Bellissima!” Children stretched forward to greet her. Crowds leaned from windows overhead. Photographers packed tightly into the square as the Princess of Wales, dressed in an azzurro — the national color of Italy — pantsuit, moved slowly through the sea of well-wishers, visibly moved by the reception during her first overseas trip since her cancer diagnosis in 2024. “It’s emotional, seeing everyone,” Kate, 44, told Mayor Marco Massari as she took in the scene.

For many in the crowd, the moment felt bigger than a routine royal visit. It marked the long-awaited return of the princess to the world stage — and the beginning of a consequential new chapter for both Kate and the monarchy itself.

“She knows the eyes of the world are on her,” Queen Elizabeth’s former press secretary Ailsa Anderson tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story. “It is a clear signal she is back in business.”

On the same day, roughly 850 miles away in London, Kate’s father-in-law, King Charles, delivered a speech before Parliament during the State Opening — one of the monarchy’s grandest traditions — wearing the Imperial State Crown for only the fourth time in his reign and fresh off a widely praised U.S. visit that helped steady the royal family during a tumultuous period. Yet it was Kate who dominated headlines around the globe.

“There’s no denying that everyone concerned has been missing the princess’s star quality. She is a huge draw wherever she goes,” says Russell Myers, author of William & Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story. “Catherine is undoubtedly a central force in the monarchy’s popularity and ability to achieve its goals and move forward. There is no better time for her to return.”

Adds Anderson: “She is our future Queen. As Queen Elizabeth used to say, you have to be seen to be believed. She is glamorous, she is beautiful. She is warm and approachable. On the back of the King’s successful visit to the States, William and Kate are upping their game.”

And nowhere did Princess Kate spread that excitement quite like the schools she visited to witness the famed Reggio Emilia Approach — the child-centered educational philosophy that inspired the two-day visit and closely aligns with the work of her Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, launched in 2021. The Italy trip — also her first solo overseas visit in nearly four years — marked a major step in expanding the princess’s long-running early-childhood work beyond Britain through a series of fact-finding visits focused on leading international models.

At one preschool, Kate crouched beside children exploring nature outdoors, handled newts from a pond and joined the students in sculpting tree roots from clay. “I speak a bit of Italian. What is your name? I am Catarina,” she told one group of kids with a smile, later chatting with them in Italian and learning new vocabulary along the way. At another school, young students crowded around her for hugs and high fives as she spoke about animals and fondly recalled the family dog Lupo, which she happily acknowledged was Italian for wolf. Teachers wiped away tears after she left, as comparisons to Princess Diana surfaced repeatedly.

“She is like Diana was,” says local reporter Paulo Rosato. “Here in Italy, we need a good story — a good representation of family.”

The princess repeatedly tied the visit back to her and Prince William’s own children — Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8 — telling locals on May 14 that she had spent the night before on the phone with them sharing stories from her first day of outings. Wearing a bracelet engraved with her children’s initials, she appeared especially energized during an outdoor learning session.

Christian Guy, executive director of the Centre for Early Childhood, says Kate “was in her element in nature, seeing the power of the outdoors.” He adds, “It is something that will stay with her for a very long time — she gets such joy from spending time with children.”

During a stop at a countryside farm stay outside Reggio Emilia, Kate rolled up her sleeves alongside local families to make tortelli pasta by hand — laughing as flour dusted the table and chatting about cooking in her kitchen.

“When I do this at home, it’s without a big bowl, and it goes everywhere,” she joked. “It’s a good workout.”

Against the backdrop of rolling green hills and multigenerational families gathered around the table, the scene offered a vivid glimpse of how the princess hopes to shape this next phase of her public role: blending warmth, hands-on engagement and long-term purpose.

Kate’s return comes at a delicate moment for the monarchy. While King Charles, 77, has helped steady the institution through his U.S. visit and high- profile appearances despite his ongoing cancer treatment, the royal family continues navigating the lingering fallout surrounding the former Prince Andrew’s arrest in February tied to his connection to Jeffrey Epstein, alongside the years-long rift with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

“It will always be a throbbing wound in the background,” says Anderson.

The slimmed-down monarchy is increasingly looking threadbare, with William, 43, and Kate remaining its youngest senior working royals, a stark reminder of how heavily the institution now relies on them to carry its future. All while George, Charlotte and Louis remain years away from public roles of their own.

“Princess Anne and the other senior working royals are all stretched thin — and none of them are young,” says Catherine Mayer, author of the upcoming Divide and Rule. “William and Catherine carry the whole thing.”

Mayer describes the back-to-back overseas appearances by Charles and Kate as “a one-two punch” by the palace.

“At the point the King went to America, the main theme was the fragility of the monarchy — and the fragility of the two of them,” she says. “If you have the sense of them both fully back — doing it well — that shifts the perception.”

Those close to the princess stress that the timing of this trip had to feel right personally as well as institutionally.

“The overriding concern from all quarters has been about her health and managing her eventual return to full-time duties,” Myers says. “She was given every assurance to take as much time as she needed, and this trip signifies that she is feeling better than she has in the last couple of years.”

Adds a royal aide of Kate, who announced she was in remission from an undisclosed form of cancer in early 2025: “It’s an important step in the princess’s recovery journey. She takes great joy from this work. It is only right that her first international trip since her illness is one that is focused on an issue that she is committed to championing for decades to come.”

As she headed home to her family after the trip, Kate reflected on the emotional impact of the visit in a personal statement. “I have had such a deeply moving and unforgettable time here,” she said. “Thank you to the people of Reggio Emilia for welcoming me into a culture of care with such warmth and generosity.”

More trips abroad are expected to follow, including a possible appearance alongside William in the U.S. this summer for the World Cup and celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the nation’s independence, as well as at the sixth Earthshot Prize Awards in Mumbai later this year. If she attends, it would mark Kate’s first Earthshot ceremony since the couple traveled to Boston for the event in 2022.

“She is an impeccable force for good, a fantastic standard- bearer—not just for the royal family but for the country,” says a family friend.

Before then will come more major royal moments, including Trooping the Colour in June, where Kate and her family are expected to once again take center stage on the Buckingham Palace balcony. The Waleses are also preparing for a summer focused on family life in Windsor — their final one before George heads to boarding school — while continuing to settle into their new home, Forest Lodge.

Expectations around William and Kate’s future role within the monarchy are only intensifying.

“For the moment, after that period of unprecedented turbulence, they are doing a very good job of making it look like the ship is steady,” says Mayer. “That is why Kate is so important.”

Though confidence in the monarchy has grown following Charles’s successful turn in Washington, the focus increasingly remains on the Waleses.

“Charles is the incumbent, but she and William are the future,” Mayer says. “There is no institution without them.”
