Rylan Clark has issued an apology as he revealed the unexpected reason for missing his BBC radio show. The former X Factor contestant is in the midst of a busy period, with him arguably being the busiest person in showbusiness. Last month saw him on commentary duties for the Eurovision, where he was joined by Angela Scanlon for the semi-finals.

Rylan joined BBC Radio 2 on a permanent basis back in 2019, making the Saturday afternoon slot his own. He initially covered for Zoe Ball while she took some time off.

From here, Rylan has made the show one of the weekend’s biggest on all of UK radio. His three hour show is full of feel-good hits, ample amounts of chat and listener interaction.

However, Rylan was nowhere to be found on Saturday afternoon (June 27). Instead, legendary DJ Mark Goodier had to fill in for him at the last minute.

Calling his best friend in show business Emma Willis, whose show airs before his, Rylan shared that he was stranded abroad. Despite doing everything he could, Rylan was not able to find a way home from the French city of Nice.

“I decided to go away with my partner and a couple of my friends to Nice for a few days and just enjoy the sun. I didn’t have work this week, I’d managed to clear my diary and I was like, that’s amazing.

“I was flying back very early this morning, so I went to the airport and it was like, ‘no’. I was like, “sorry?’ At one point I was going to get on an eight-hour train, which still would have made me late for work, but would have got me home today.

“In the end I thought, ‘you know what, you’ve done well for yourself, I’m just going to stay another day’,” he said.

Rylan added to the new Strictly Come Dancing presenter: “What can I do? I’m not going to be able to make the show today so I thought I can either really stress myself out about this and sweat my foundation off my forehead or I’m just going to have to swallow it and deal with it and go, ‘what a shame, there’s worse places to be’.”

Poking fun at Rylan, a BBC spokesperson wrote on social media: “Rylan got stranded somewhere Nice…” To which Rylan cheekily replied: “So unprofessional.”

Rylan proceeded to take to his Instagram story with a snap of him enjoying a glass of wine in France as he further elaborated on why he was missing. He wrote: “Soz about today’s show.

“I blame everyone but myself. Genuinely had it all sussed out and then flights all cancelled. Thanks Mark for stepping in you legend. Gonna have a rosé and think of you all.”

With Mark in the hot seat, the DJ, who presented on BBC Radio 1 between 1987 and 2002, spoke to listeners about their funny holiday tales and hosted the film and TV quiz Couch Potatoes. Rylan will be as normal next week at the time of 3pm.
