‘Rooster’ becomes HBO’s most-watched comedy debut in 15+ years, averaging 6.5 million viewers and surpassing hits like ‘Veep’ and ‘Girls’.

HBO has a massive hit on its hands. Rooster, the new comedy starring Steve Carell, has become the network’s most-watched debut season for a comedy series in more than 15 years, averaging 6.5 million viewers across its first season, according to Warner Bros. Discovery.

To put that number in perspective, only two HBO comedies have ever achieved a higher 90-day viewership average: Hung, which premiered in 2009, and Sex and the City, which launched back in 1998. That is the kind of company that signals a genuine cultural moment, not just a solid ratings win.
What makes the achievement even more striking is that Rooster still has room to grow. The series premiered on March 8 and concluded on May 10, meaning it has two more weeks remaining in its 90-day viewership window. Its current 6.5 million average already clears every HBO comedy of the last decade and a half, a list that includes some of the most acclaimed and talked-about shows in recent memory: Enlightened, Girls, Veep, Silicon Valley, and Insecure.

What Is Rooster About?
Set on a college campus, Rooster centers on Carell as a novelist navigating a complicated relationship with his daughter, played by Charly Clive. The ensemble also includes Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, and Lauren Tsai, with Connie Britton in a recurring role. The series comes from showrunners Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, both of whom are under overall deals at Warner Bros. Television, the studio behind the project.
Executive producers on Rooster include Lawrence, Jeff Ingold, and Liza Katzer for Doozer Productions, alongside Tarses, Jonathan Krisel, Barbie Adler, Annie Mebane, David Stassen, Anthony King, and Carell himself.

A New Era for HBO Comedy?
For a network long associated with prestige drama, Rooster represents a significant win on the comedy front. HBO has consistently developed acclaimed comedies over the years, but reaching viewership numbers that rival the Sex and the City era is a different kind of benchmark entirely.
With two weeks still left in its measurement window, there is a real possibility the show climbs even higher. Either way, Rooster has already cemented itself as one of HBO’s most important comedy launches in a generation.
