Tom Read Wilson reveals the darkest moment viewers never saw in the jungle — and the one fear that truly broke him

To millions of viewers, Tom Read Wilson looked calm, witty, and unshakeable in the jungle.

But behind the sharp humour and polished charm, the I’m A  Celebrity runner-up was quietly fighting a deeply emotional battle that cameras almost never captured.

Now, weeks after the final, the Celebs Go Dating star has finally opened up about the moment he completely broke down — and the one thing in the jungle that genuinely terrified him.

And it wasn’t spiders.
It wasn’t snakes.
It wasn’t even the brutal Bushtucker Trials.

The hidden breakdown at Doomsville

At one point in the series, Tom and five other campmates were sent to the dreaded Doomsville camp — a bleak, stripped-back outpost reserved for those who lost head-to-head challenges.Celebs Go Dating's Tom Read Wilson: 'I never really get beyond date number four'

Viewers saw tears.
They saw hugs.
They saw his fellow campmates rushing to comfort him.

But what they never saw was why Tom truly collapsed.

“There was something incredibly heavy about that first day in Doomsville,” Tom later confessed.

Yet in a surprising twist, he revealed that the camp itself wasn’t the real cause of his breakdown.

“I actually adored Doomsville,” he admitted. “It was intimate. The creek was beautiful. It wasn’t the place that upset me.”

So what was it?

“It just happened to coincide with the moment I realised that life outside wasn’t paused,” Tom explained.
“The world was still moving. People were still living their lives. And suddenly, I felt completely left behind.”

That realisation hit him with devastating force.

“I couldn’t stop thinking about it,” he said. “I became terribly blue. But the people around me lifted me up. They saved me in that moment.”Watch: The Voice rejected I'm a Celeb's Tom Read Wilson – and one judge thought he was 85

The one thing that truly scared him

For someone who faced scorpions, rotten food, and terrifying trials, fans assumed Tom’s biggest fear would involve the jungle’s wildlife.

They were wrong.

“The strangest thing is, I wasn’t afraid of the creepy stuff,” he revealed.
“I was terrified I wouldn’t be able to sleep.”

Tom admitted he feared exhaustion more than danger.

“I worried I’d sleep badly, become worn down, mentally fragile, and not able to cope. That fear really stuck with me.”

From late arrival to fan favourite

Tom entered the jungle late, arriving alongside Vogue Williams as a “Chief Explorer.”

Yet within days, he became one of the most beloved contestants of the entire series — ultimately reaching the final two, narrowly losing the crown to AngryGinge.

The grand finale drew a staggering 13 million votes, the highest in over a decade — proof of just how deeply viewers connected with the cast, and especially with Tom.

A bond deeper than real life

Reflecting on his time in camp, Tom admitted the emotional closeness shocked even him.

“When you count the waking hours, I probably spent more real time with those people than with my closest friends in the past year,” he said.

“You get exposed to one another completely. I surprised myself with how much I opened up.”

“I always thought of myself as a private person — yet in there, I told everyone everything.”

Fans still devastated by his loss

Although he didn’t take home the crown, many viewers believe Tom was the true winner of hearts.

Social media erupted after the final:

“I honestly thought Tom should have won.”
“Ginge already had a massive TikTok following — Tom deserved this more.”
“I’m still heartbroken that Tom didn’t win.”

A different kind of victory

Tom may not wear the King of the Jungle crown — but what he gained was something far deeper:

Clarity.
Connection.
And the courage to face the quiet fears he never expected.

Behind the charm, behind the wit, behind the jungle smile…
Tom Read Wilson was fighting emotions no camera truly captured.

And that may be his bravest victory of all.
