Vernon Kay has announced that he will be taking a brief break from his BBC Radio 2 programme – in order to support his daughter.
It recently emerged that the 52-year-old presenter and Radio 2 star had split from presenter Tess Daly, with whom he shares two daughters. This week, Vernon told listeners that he won’t be on air today (June 19), because their daughter Amber is heading off to university next year.
Vernon is taking a day off work to accompany her to university open days. Vernon kicked things off on the show by asking listeners about their weekend plans before touching on events like the Isle of Wight Festival.
The presenter explained: “I’m not in tomorrow. I’m having Friday off. Because I’m going to university open days. I think the time is right for me to step away from broadcasting and go back into further education.
“No, I’m joking. I’m taking our youngest to open days around universities and I’m really looking forward to it. It’s an exciting time in life, and also I get to hold her hand.

“Do you know what I mean? Not necessarily on the campuses but walking around whatever town we’re going to. So sweet.” Tess and Vernon are also parents to their eldest daughter Phoebe, aged 21.
Vernon and Tess revealed their amicable split, after 23 years, with a joint statement in May. They wrote: “After much consideration, and with a deep sense of care and respect for one another, we have made the decision to separate amicably.
“This has not been an easy choice, but it comes from a place of mutual understanding and a shared desire for what is best for both of us. We remain great friends and, most importantly, fully committed to our roles as loving and supportive parents, which will always be our priority. There are no other parties involved in this decision. We will not be making any further public comments.”
The couple and their daughters currently live in a six-bedroom home in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, and it remains to be seen whether either Tess or Vernon plans to move out.
