Cannon Hall Farm regular Robert Nicholson broke down in tears as he announced the devastating news that a farm favourite is having to be put to sleep. Farmer Rob, who stars on Channel 5 show Springtime on the Farm alongside his brother Dave, as well as The Yorkshire Vet, took to social media with the heartbreaking news today (July 22) that Ruby the horse is to be euthanised.

In an emotional video, Rob explained through tears: “We’ve reached the end of Ruby’s road, unfortunately. Marco’s been out this morning, Ruby’s on three legs. There’s just nothing more that can be done for her. She’s eating, she’s bright, but she’s absolutely stoked with pain relief. She’s literally had an injection from Marco yesterday in addition to the 70 paracetamol and four sachets of bute (phenylbutazone). And she’s still on three legs.

“I just can’t, in good conscience, keep her going like that.

“Marco says that it’s a matter of time before she goes down and can’t get back up, it’s a matter of time before she gets ulcerative colitis, it’s a matter of time before something happens that sees her laid there… and… at least now she’s in a position where she can eat, she looks bright.

“She’s obviously in loads of pain without the pain relief, but thanks to the pain relief we’re managing it, but it’s a matter of time before we can’t.

“That’s the decision, that’s Marco’s recommendation. I’m not going to stand in his way, because he knows his stuff. He’s a great horse vet and he’s a really good guy. He knows that Ruby’s race is run.”

The farm confirmed in the social media caption alongside a video of Ruby struggling to walk, but eating: “Farmer Rob here with a statement we prayed we’d never have to make. Unfortunately, after a long and brave battle, and after much consultation with Marco, our excellent horse vet, we’ve had to make the agonising decision to put Ruby to sleep.

“Her condition has worsened dramatically over the last 72 hours and, even with the maximum dose of painkillers, we were unable to keep her pain-free. It’s been a very difficult few months here on the farm, and we are so very sorry we couldn’t bring you better news.

“We thank you all for the amazing support you’ve shown to Ruby and everyone here at the farm. For now, Soldier will be living with Iris, and the early signs are that they are going to be firm friends.”

Fans rushed to show their support, with one posting: “Oh Rob this is truly devastating news, poor poor beautiful Ruby she has been so so brave and kept fighting. The grief you are feeling and showing is heartbreaking.”

Another echoed: “So very sorry to hear this Rob, Ruby is such a beautiful animal as are all the others you have at CHF. Sending you all much love and keeping you in my prayers. Thoughts are also with Ruth and her family.”
