Family, friends and members of the Ocean Springs community gathered to honor the life of 18-year-old Nolan Wells as his funeral was held more than two weeks after his body was recovered near Horn Island, Mississippi.
The service marked an emotional milestone for Wells’ family, who continue to seek answers while the official investigation remains ongoing.
Held at Centerpoint Church in Ocean Springs, the funeral included a public visitation followed by a memorial service. Civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton delivered the eulogy, while funeral arrangements were provided by Lockett-Williams Mortuary. Following the service, Wells’ family organized a celebration of life at the Jackson County Fairgrounds to honor his memory.
Several public figures have also supported the family in recent weeks. Filmmaker Tyler Perry covered the cost of the funeral, former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick helped finance an independent autopsy requested by the family, and media entrepreneur Byron Allen contributed to a memorial fund established in Wells’ name.
The funeral came as investigators continue reviewing evidence surrounding Wells’ death, with several developments emerging over the past week.
FBI Issues First Detailed Public Statement
For weeks, questions surrounded the FBI’s involvement in the investigation, leading to widespread speculation online. This week, however, the FBI’s Jackson Field Office publicly clarified its role for the first time.
According to the bureau, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office remains the lead investigative agency, while the FBI is providing assistance at the request of local authorities. The bureau described its role as offering federal resources, technical support and investigative assistance when needed, emphasizing that it has not assumed control of the investigation.
The statement was intended to clarify the federal agency’s involvement after numerous online theories suggested otherwise.
Grand Jury Expected to Review the Case
The Wells family recently met with the local district attorney to discuss the status of the investigation. Following that meeting, attorneys representing the family confirmed that the case is expected to be presented to a grand jury.
Officials have not announced when that process will begin, nor have they indicated whether any criminal charges are being considered. Authorities continue to describe the investigation as active.
The family has repeatedly called for a thorough examination of all available evidence while awaiting the completion of forensic testing.
Investigation Still Ongoing
Wells disappeared on July 4 after traveling to Horn Island with a group of friends. His body was recovered two days later during a multi-agency search involving local, state and federal partners.
Authorities have previously stated that drowning is being considered as part of the investigation, but the official cause and manner of death have not yet been released. Investigators continue to await toxicology results and other forensic findings before reaching final conclusions.
Law enforcement has not publicly announced that foul play has been established, nor have investigators identified any suspects or released additional investigative findings.
