The investigation into the death of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells continues as authorities await key forensic results, while attorneys representing his family are urging the public to distinguish verified information from unconfirmed claims circulating online.
Wells disappeared on July 4 after traveling to Horn Island, Mississippi, with a group of friends to celebrate Independence Day. According to authorities, his friends later left the island without him. After Wells was reported missing that evening, a multi-agency search involving the U.S. Coast Guard, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, and the National Park Service was launched.
On July 6, a National Park Service ranger located Wells’ body in the water near the island’s northwestern shoreline. The Jackson County Coroner’s Office later confirmed his identity through dental records.
At this stage, investigators have publicly stated that they suspect drowning, but they have not officially released the cause or manner of death. Authorities have indicated that final autopsy findings remain pending while toxicology testing is completed.
In recent days, the case has attracted significant attention on social media, where numerous theories have circulated regarding Wells’ final hours. One widely shared claim centered on a photograph that allegedly showed Wells attending a pool party after leaving Horn Island.
However, subsequent reporting by multiple news organizations found that the image had been taken on June 27, approximately one week before Wells disappeared, rather than after July 4 as some online posts had claimed. Individuals familiar with the photograph confirmed its earlier date, undermining speculation that it documented events after Wells’ disappearance.
Benjamin Crump, one of the attorneys representing Wells’ family, had previously shared the image while emphasizing that its accompanying claims had not been verified and that all potential leads should be investigated. Wells’ mother has also stated publicly that she had never communicated with the individual who originally shared the social media post that sparked the speculation.
Another viral claim involved a video in which a voice could be heard demanding the return of a cellphone. Some online users suggested the speaker was Wells. However, the individual heard in the recording later identified himself publicly and stated that the voice was his, not Wells’, a clarification later reported by several media outlets.
While some online theories have since been challenged or disproven, investigators continue to examine evidence directly related to the case.
The Wells family recently met with the local district attorney, and following that meeting, attorneys confirmed that the investigation is expected to be presented to a grand jury.
