What began as another cosy Friday night on Gogglebox has now spiralled into one of the show’s most heated controversies in recent memory.
Viewers were left furious after long-standing couple Giles Wood and Mary Killen appeared to take a dismissive swipe at Adolescence co-creator and star Stephen Graham while reacting to the record-breaking Netflix drama.
As the pair settled down to watch the four-part series, Mary attempted to explain the programme to her husband — but it was one off-hand remark that instantly ignited a social-media firestorm.
“This is incredible because Stephen Graham — you know, that actor who always plays short northerners — has also co-written it.”
Within minutes, X (formerly Twitter) erupted.
“Unbearable. Get Rid!”
Fans did not hold back, with many calling the comment rude, dismissive and classist.
Gogglebox fans were left raging after two of the show’s stars took a shock swipe at Adolescence’s Stephen Graham during Friday’s episode
As couple, Giles Wood and Mary Killen, tuned in to watch the hit Netflix drama, Mary’s comments had some viewers less than impressed (Stephen pictured)
One viewer fumed:
“‘Always plays short northerners’ — are you serious? Get rid of Giles and Mary. Unbearable.”
Another wrote:
“Mary on #Gogglebox is not nice at all. That was such an unnecessary dig.”
Yet the nation remains divided.
A small group of loyal supporters leapt to the couple’s defence, insisting their awkward humour is being taken too seriously.
“Only going to refer to Stephen Graham as ‘that actor who always plays short northerners’ from now on — I’m crying,” joked one fan, while another added:
“They’re just eccentric. They don’t deserve this level of hate.”
Explaining the show to Giles, Mary said: ‘This is incredible because Stephen Graham – you know that actor who always plays short northerners – he has also co-written it.’

Sharing their thoughts on X, fans wrote: ‘He always plays short Notherners Really?? Sheesh Mary’

But, other’s found the comment funny and added: ‘Only going to refer to Stephen Graham as “that actor who always plays short northerners” from now on’
The comment that cut deeper
The backlash comes at a sensitive moment. Adolescence has become a cultural phenomenon, drawing 66.3 million viewers in just two weeks — making it the most-watched UK title in Netflix history.
The drama follows the devastating story of Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old boy accused of murdering a female classmate after being influenced by toxic online culture and misogyny.
The series has already made British TV history as the first streaming show ever to top the weekly ratings chart.
Gogglebox cast left shaken
Ironically, while Mary’s remark angered viewers, Adolescence itself left much of the Gogglebox cast visibly emotional.
Fan favourites Jenny and Lee were seen fighting back tears, while newcomers Michael and Sally wiped their eyes as they watched with sons Jake and Harry. Elsewhere, Jane admitted she “stopped breathing” during one of the most intense scenes.
As police storm the family home to arrest Jamie in the drama, Mary herself later asked:
“How can a little chap like that murder anyone?” — a line that struck some viewers as tragically ironic given the earlier comment.
Stephen Graham breaks silence on season two
Amid the uproar, Stephen Graham has revealed that a second series of Adolescence is now being considered after the “overwhelming” response.
Speaking to Variety, the actor said:
“Possibly. Let’s see how the figures are — but yeah, there’s definitely potential to tell another story.”
His wife and co-star Hannah Walters added:
“A prequel won’t happen, but there’s so much mileage in exploring human nature again.”
From sofa comment to national storm
What was meant to be a casual line on a living-room sofa has now become a full-blown Gogglebox scandal — with viewers once again questioning whether Giles and Mary have finally crossed the line.
As Adolescence continues to dominate national conversation, one thing is certain:
The call to “get rid of them” has never been louder.
